Situation: Short timeline to produce a Rule 104 significantly larger than originally estimated.
A $40+ million contract dispute going before the Civilian Board of Contract Appeals consisted primarily of electronic data. After unpacking and analyzing the data, the collection became three times larger than the client originally estimated. There was also significant Privacy Act and privileged information throughout the collection that had to be withheld. The filing deadline was unmovable.
Solution: IE Discovery's legal staff employed automated review and culling techniques to isolate and place materials containing Privacy Act information and other privileged material and placed them in electronic notebooks for attorney review. Significant savings in time and budget were realized by using automated coding/indexing techniques based on document and data categories, so that the filing was on time and within the original budget allocated.
Situation: Voluminous paper and electronic data needs review by multiple users with different perspectives - limited government resources
Attorneys working on a large Title VII class action currently in Federal Court need to respond to a request for production of documents on an ongoing basis. Responsive data includes a large volume of paper and electronic documents with Privacy Act material from many location and numerous document custodians. Attorneys also require legal support to assist with the document review prior to production.
Solution: IE Discovery created five interlinked Web-based repositories on the InfoDox® platform, enabling client attorneys, testifying and non-testifying experts, and other interested parties to separately access information pertinent to their needs.
- Document-centric material
- Anecdotal information
- Statistical data
- Electronic discovery (including monthly backup tapes and e-mail)
The structure enables interested parties to access differing types of information about the case while maintaining document-level security to prevent inadvertent disclosure of information to adverse party or testifying experts. The case's data comprises information from government personnel databases, automated staffing solution systems, and e-mail from both archival tapes and current messages.
Our Legal Services Group helped meet the challenge presented by lack of time and resources by performing reviews, providing interview and deposition support, and maintaining electronic notebooks for each stakeholder.
Situation: Presenting 70+ case issues in a contracts dispute
In a complex case before a Board of Appeals with a $10+ million exposure and more than 70 issues, the Trial Attorney sought to present the Finding of Fact electronically to opposing counsel and to the Board of Contract Appeals, in order to reduce the amount of paper involved.
Solution: IE Discovery developed an electronic brief that contained citation links to each imaged exhibit within the brief. In addition, IE Discovery assisted the government in presenting many of the complex issues graphically to the Board in the pre-hearing and hearing.
Situation: Extensive document review by geographically dispersed government attorneys--needed in a short time frame
An environmental matter in Federal Court required multiple document reviews by 19 government attorneys in Washington, D.C. and three Virginia locations.
Solution: IE Discovery legal staff helped perform the initial review to narrow the document universe. Using ReviewDox™, an automated process was designed for assigning documents to those attorneys conversant with the document content. Real-time results tracking helped manage the number of attorneys needed to complete the review and meet the deadline.
